HURRICANE IRMA ALERT 24 ISSUED "HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS"

A HURRICANE WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE ENTIRE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

 

 

 

A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE AFFECTING OR CAN AFFECT THE AFOREMENTIONED AREAS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

 

 

 

AT 02:00AM EDT, THE EYE OF HURRICANE IRMA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 21.5 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 73.3 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 64 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST (WSW) OF PROVIDENCIALES TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS, 35 MILES NORTH NORTH EAST (NNE) OF MATTHEW TOWN INAGUA, 64 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST (SSW) OF ABRAHAM’S BAY MAYAGUANA, ABOUT 80 MILES SOUTHEAST (SE) OF SALINA POINT, ACKLINS AND ABOUT 355 MILES SOUTHEAST (SE) OF NEW PROVIDENCE.

 

 

 

HURRICANE IRMA IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 16 MPH AND THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT DAY OR TWO WITH A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED. A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED BY LATE SATURDAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE EYE OF IRMA SHOULD CONTINUE TO MOVE WESTWARD AWAY FROM THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND TOWARD THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS THIS MORNING. THE EYE SHOULD PASS SOUTH OF SALINA POINT ACKLINS NEAR 0800AM THIS MORNING, SOUTH OF DEADMAN’S CAY, LONG ISLAND NEAR MIDDAY TODAY AND ACROSS OR NEAR DUNCAN TOWN, RAGGED ISLAND BY LATE AFTERNOON.    

 

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 160MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. IRMA IS A CATEGORY FIVE (5) HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT DAY OT TWO, BUT IRMA IS FOERECAST TO REMAIN A POWERFUL CATEGORY FOUR (4) OR FIVE (5) HURRICANE DURING THE NEXT COUPE OF DAYS.

 

 

 

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 75 MILES FROM THE CENTER AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES FROM THE CENTER.

 

 

 

HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE OCCURRING IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS, LITTLE AND GREAT INAGUA AND MAYAGUANA. STRONG TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE BEGINNING TO AFFECT ACKLINS, CROOKED ISLAND AND SAMANA CAY AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY MORNING. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE BEGINNING TO AFFECT SOUTH LONG ISLAND AND RAGGED ISLAND AND WILL BEGIN TO SPREAD INTO NORTH LONG ISLAND, CAT ISLAND, RUM CAY, SAN SALVADOR AND THE EXUMAS BY DAY BREAK.

 

HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY.

 

 

 

EXTENSIVE TO SEVERE FLOODING CAN BE EXPECTED AS IRMA IS FORECAST TO PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 8 TO 12 INCHES.

 

 

 

THE COMBINATION OF DANGEROUS STORM SURGE AND LARGE DESTRUCTIVE WAVES NEAR THE EYE OF HURRICANE IRMA CAN RAISE WATER LEVELS BY AS MUCH AS 15 TO 20 FEET ABOVE THE NORMAL TIDE. RESIDENTS LIVING NEAR THE COAST ARE ASKED TO MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND INLAND.  

 

 

 

SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS THROUGHOUT THE BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS SHOULD HAVE ALREADY SOUGHT SAFE HARBOUR FOR THEIR VESSELS.

 

 

 

THE NEXT ALERT ON HURRICANE IRMA WILL BE ISSUED AT 06:00AM TODAY.
