BARBARA ZÁ FRANKS
Barbara Zá Franks is a native Grand Bahamian and has been a resident of Shanghai, China for the past seven years. A teacher by profession, Barbara began her journey to the Middle Kingdom in 2011 as a part of an internship requirement to teach English in China while pursuing her Masters’ of Education degree in Educational Leadership at American College of Education. What was originally intended to be a one-year teach-abroad experience, has turned into seven years and counting of studying, living, working, and entrepreneurship abroad. Since her initial relocation to China, Barbara has completed her graduate studies and has also attained U.S.A. certifications as a Primary School Teacher and K-12 School Administrator. In addition, she will begin her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Management at Southwest University, Chongqing this coming fall semester under a full scholarship offered by the China Scholarship Council and the Government of China. During this time, she will focus her research on 21st Century Skills in K-12 Education and Developing Strategies for Integrated Curriculum Implementation.
In addition to her ongoing studies, Barbara worked full-time for the first five years of her stay in Shanghai at a top private bilingual school, Shanghai Pinghe School, where she served as English and Social Studies teacher for second through fifth grades. Her desire to continuously grow and make an impact in the field of education prompted her to establish her own company in 2016 – Shanghai D.R.E.A.M. – which is the initialism for “Developing Real-World Educational Experiences for All-Encompassing Minds”. At D.R.E.A.M, Barbara and her team work collaboratively with schools and training centers throughout China to develop curriculum, design custom learning programs, and train teachers. As a Curriculum and Instruction specialist, Barbara has worked with local and international schools, government entities, and corporate clients to design a variety of programs covering topics related to English Language Learning, Etiquette for Children and Adults, and Cross-Cultural Communication for Doing Business in China, as well as several customized Professional Development programs for various groups of teachers and school administrators. In addition to her work through D.R.E.A.M., Barbara is also a sought-after Education Consultant and serves as Director of Education and for several new and rapidly expanding English learning center franchises.
As a result of her passion for education and travel, Barbara recently launched the Bahamian arm of her Shanghai-based company, D.R.E.A.M. Education Solutions, to share the gift of education and travel with fellow Bahamians. At D.R.E.A.M. Education Solutions, Barbara offers concierge university placement services for students desiring to study in China. Through this platform, she provides access to affordable university education to Bahamians who may otherwise not be able to attain a tertiary education, as well as access to thousands of scholarships in hundreds of fields at China’s top universities. For those wishing to experience teaching abroad, D.R.E.A.M. Education Solutions offers free job placement assistance for those with a minimum qualification of a Bachelors’ degree and 2 years working experiences.
Her long-term goal is to bridge the teaching and learning experiences of both eastern and western education and to develop meaningful real-world educational programs that empower teachers and students to become positive, peaceful, well-rounded national and international leaders in an ever-changing global society.
