BAHAMAS ELECTED TO THE COUNCIL OF THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION

 

The Bahamas was elected by the 31st Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), on the 29th November 2019, to serve on the IMO Council for the period 2019-2021. The Bahamas will serve a two -year term on the 40 member Council which will meet to commence its work on 5th December 2019. Also elected to the Council, in category “C” are: Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and Turkey.

 

During its term on the Council, The Bahamas has pledged to continue to provide significant and practical inputs, in a collaborative way, on important issues and to support the structural reforms, being considered by the IMO, which represents the interest of the full spectrum of member states.

 

According to an IMO release “The Council is the executive organ of IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the organization. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except that of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention.”

 

The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of maritime pollution by ships.
