Bahamas Re-Elected to the Council of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) under Category “C”

On 27 November 2009 the Commonwealth of The Bahamas was re-elected to the Council of the United Nations International Maritime Organization under Category “C” during the 26th Session of the General Assembly of the IMO in London. The Bahamas currently maintains the world’s third largest ship registry, behind Panama and Liberia respectively, with a gross tonnage of 52.8 million as of 30 September 2009.

The Bahamas Signs Tax Information Exchange Agreement with the United Kingdom

NASSAU, Bahamas — The Bahamas and the United Kingdom signed a Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) at the Ministry of Finance, Nassau on Thursday, 29 October 2009. The signing of this TIEA is another step towards the Government of The Bahamas fulfilling its commitment to the evolved international standards of transparency and information exchange, according to Minister of State for Finance the Hon Zhivago Laing. The TIEA represents the fourth completed by the Government and the second concluded with a major OECD country.

‘Short-Stay Visa Waiver Agreement’ between The Bahamas and the European Community, signed on 28 May 2009

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce that today, 28 May 2009, at a Ceremony at the Council of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, H.E. Mr. Paul H. Farquharson, Ambassador of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the European Communities (based in London), signed the “Short Stay Visa Waiver Agreement” between The Bahamas and the European Community. The Agreement would be provisionally applied as of 28 May 2009, and so with immediate effect, holders of valid Bahamian passports will be able to travel without a visa for short stays of up to three months to the following European Union countries which apply the Schengen agreement:
