INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE FROM THE HON FRED MITCHELL MP
MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE
10 July 2022
I am indeed grateful that Bahamians around the world are proudly celebrating the anniversary of our independence in its 49th iteration. The memories of that night way back in 1973 are still fresh to me. In one sense though, I cannot believe that so many years have gone by.
Yet, we are a young nation. We have miles to go before we sleep. We have many challenges which face us. However, as you gather I am sure you will remember the refrain of Phil Stubbs, one of our great musicians: “I am proud to be a Bahamian”.
I have had the advantage of seeing all the pictures of the various observances around the world. This year is a precursor to the big event next year when we will mark 50 years as a nation.
Our Prime Minister, Philip Davis, also wants you to know that those who serve us overseas in our diplomatic corps are very much appreciated for what they do and the sacrifices they make.
Our Governor General, Sir Cornelius Smith, received greetings from President Joe Biden of the United States. That was very kind of the President. Many other world leaders have sent expressions of support. We are well regarded throughout the world.
Looming upon us are the problems of crime, climate change, social and economic dislocation. What we know, however, is that we are the masters of our own fate. It is within our strength and that of the Almighty that we continue to guard our heritage and build our nation.
Thank you all and I hope you see you soon.
