NEMA Receives Briefings from BEC

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) received information from the Bahamas Electricity Corporation and the Lynden Pindling International Airport, on August 25, 2011, concerning issues arising from Hurricane Irene’s effect on the various Bahamian Islands.

The Bahamas Electricity Corporation reported that it is presently monitoring its systems in New Providence and the Family Islands as Hurricane Irene continues to impact the country.

The Department of Statistics Releases Gross Domestic Product 2010 Figures

The National Accounts Section of the Department of Statistics announces the release of the 2010 preliminary estimates along with the historically revised estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the period 1997 to 2009. The 2010 preliminary results are based on early estimates from major data sources such as the Central Bank, Ministry of Tourism, and the Foreign Trade Section of the Department of Statistics, etc. They are also based on indicators which normally mimic movements of particular industries such as hotel room rates, megawatt sales, Building Permits, chargeable telephone minutes, Consumer Price Index, etc. The 2010 GDP figures are Preliminary and as more data become available the figures will be revised in keeping with international practices and procedures.
