Christmas Message from His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, GCMG, Governor General, 2010
My Fellow Bahamians: It is with a grateful spirit that I greet you during the Christmas season, a time of generosity and gift-giving. It was at the first Christmas that the angels sang, “Peace on earth to men of goodwill”.
Christmas is a time to renew our commitment to peace: peace in our personal lives, peace in our communities, peace in the world. It is a time of hope: hope for a new beginning, hope for a better way of life, hope for a brighter future.
Christmas Message from the Rt. Hon. Hubert A. Ingraham, Prime Minister, 2010
I extend best wishes to Bahamians everywhere and to all those visiting with us at this time of year a very Merry Christmas. Christmas is the happiest of religious celebrations in our country marked by family gathering, religious services and Junkanoo. This year Christmas comes as The Bahamas is about to experience the beginnings of an economic turn around; a true gift for many Bahamian families facing job losses and reduced incomes during the past two years of global and domestic recession.

Junkanoo Tickets Available On-Line
Nothing is more indigenous and unique to Bahamian culture than Junkanoo. It is a music and dance form that originated in The Bahamas during the days of slavery. A festive parade complete with colourful costumes, goatskin drums, clanging cowbells, whistles and horns, it has remained remarkably unchanged over the years. The parade progresses in a low, rhythmic dance called ‘rushing’. Traditionally, the festival is held in the early hours of Boxing Day (26 December) and on New Year’s Day, winding up at sunrise. The paraders ‘rush’ in organised groups and are judged on costume theme and performance in a keen competition which captures the spirit of all Bahamians at this very special time of the year.
